The Virginia Department of Health is anticipating more cases of measles to be identified in Buckingham County after an initial case on May 8 has led to the discovery of at least 12 more cases. As a reminder, measles begins with high fever, cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis before the classic rash develops around days 3-5. The majority of children will develop a complication including croup, pneumonia, hospitalization, inflammation of the brain, or even death. The good news is that the measles vaccine is highly effective in protecting your child from this serious illness. The standard series begins at 12 months with the second dose routinely being given after the 4th birthday. However, it is safe to give an early additional dose of the vaccine to infants 6-12 months of age if there is increased risk of exposure. While even 1 dose of the vaccine offers 93% protection from measles, the series can be completed early as 28 days after the first dose. It is recommended that families who live in or travel to Buckingham check their vaccinations to get protected.
If you are concerned that your child has been exposed or has symptoms of measles and is not yet vaccinated, we will triage the situation by phone in order to arrange for testing outside of the office and prevent further exposures of vulnerable infants and children.
