VDH is reporting another case of measles resulting from the recent Charlottesville case in May. Below are additional exposure locations now being reported:
- SugarBear Ice Cream, located at 1522 E. High Street in Charlottesville on Saturday, May 31, between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Indoor exposures pose the greatest risk for measles. There is minimal risk of exposure for people who were only outdoors at this location.
- Lowe’s Home Improvement, located at 400 Woodbrook Drive in Charlottesville on Sunday, June 1, between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
As a reminder, the measles vaccine is highly effective with the first dose routinely being given at 12 months of age. Booster doses are routinely given between the ages of 4-5, but can be given as soon as 28 days after the first dose. Non-immune individuals, may qualify for prophylaxis treatment within the first 72 hours of the exposure and should remain isolated and contact the health department immediately. Please use the portal to check vaccination status if you are unsure or call us if you have questions. Symptoms of measles may develop 21 days after exposure to measles. If you believe your child may have symptoms of measles, please call so that we can take special precautions to evaluate your child outside of the office in order prevent exposure to vulnerable infants and children.
We continue to monitor the local situation very carefully. This is not yet above the case threshold to be considered an outbreak, but as we remain vigilant we are preparing for the need for dedicated vaccination clinics if the number of cases continue to rise.
