Dr. Gillenwater grew up in Charlottesville, VA. After completing undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, he worked doing research in Seattle, Washington. He subsequently attended medical school at the University of Washington. His pediatric residency was completed at the University of North Carolina. He worked in private practice in Raleigh, NC until 2000, accepting a position on the faculty of the University of Virginia. He joined Pediatric Associates in 2016. Dr. Gillenwater enjoys patients of every age, finding developmental issues and cardiology particularly interesting.

He is married and has four children. He enjoys animals and the outdoors, camping, hiking, geocaching. He is also very involved in the scouting program.
