News: Changes to Tylenol dosing
Posted on June 27, 2011The makers of Tylenol (acetaminophen) are changing the strength (concentration) of Tylenol Infant drops. Eventually the generic versions of acetaminophen drops will also change to this new strength. The new strength will be the same as the Children's Tylenol which is 160mg per 5ml (1 tsp). There will be a period when both strengths will be available. It is critical that you confirm which strength you plan to use. The old strength of the Infant drops is 80mg per 0.8ml (or 100mg per 1ml). In general, acetaminophen should be dosed at 10 to 15mg per kilogram of weight. For instance, if using preparations of 160mg per 5ml an 11kg (24lb) child will get one tsp every 4 to 6 hours; a 5.5kg (12lb) infant should get 1/2 tsp every 4 to 6 hours. More information is available from Tylenol.
